Matanuska Electric Seeks Board Member for East Susitna District

By Brian Kassof

The Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) is accepting applications for the Board of Director’s seat representing its East Susitna District (the area around Wasilla). The Director who held the seat, previous Board President Bob Doyle, resigned from the Board in May to accept a position as a Commissioner on the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA). Applications for those wishing to be considered for the position are available on the MEA website. Applications must be received by July 5.

The resignation of Director Doyle was unexpected—the Board had re-elected him as its President less than three weeks earlier. His appointment to the RCA by Governor Dunleavy was announced on May 25. Since the RCA oversees the work of electric utilities, Doyle’s appointment meant he had to step down as an MEA Director. He had served on the MEA Board since 2010. Board Vice-President Peter Burchell has assumed the role of Current President, and the Board will elect a new President (and if necessary, Vice-President) after the new member is named.

Applicants for the East Susitna Board position must reside in the district (a map of the district is included in the application packet—MEA members can also contact Member Services at 907-761-9300 to find out what district they are in.) The Board will review applications after the July 5 deadline. It will then have 60 days either to appoint one of the applicants to the open seat or to reopen the application process. The person selected will serve out the remainder of Director Doyle’s term, which ends in 2024.
