Chugach Electric accepting applications to fill seat on Board of Directors
The Board of Directors at Chugach Electric Association is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the cooperative’s Board. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on February 9th. The Board will select one of the applicants to take the place of board member Erin Whitney, who resigned earlier this week. The person selected will serve on the Board until CEA holds its annual election in May, when Chugach member-owners will elect someone to fill out the remainder of Whitney’s term (which runs to 2025).
Whitney resigned her position on the Chugach Board, to which she was elected in 2021, after accepting the position of Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Arctic Energy. She leaves a position running the Data Collection and Management Program at Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) at the University of Alaska.
The Board expects to interview candidates for the position in mid-February and to announce its selection at its February 22 meeting. According to CEA’s Bylaws, such appointments last only until the next regular board election, when members can elect someone to fill out the remainder of the term. This means voters will select three board members during this spring’s election; two for full four-year terms and one to fill out the remaining two years of Whitney’s term. Because CEA candidates do not run for specific board seats, the top two vote-getters in May will receive the four-year terms, and the third place finisher will serve the two-year term.
